Invention at Play through May 11 Explore the playful side of invention--and the inventive side of play--with this interactive traveling exhibiion. Learn how play--the ordinary and everyday “work of childhood”--connects with the creative impulse of both historic and contemporary inventors. Invention at Play departs from traditional representations of inventors as extraordinary geniuses who are “not like us‚” to celebrate the creative skills and processes that are familiar and accessible to all people. Visitors of all ages will experience various playful habits of mind that underlie invention.
Get Lost! In the New Science Playground Daily, weather permitting $4 per person The Hall has doubled the size of the popular outdoor Science Playground with 30,000 square feet of exhibits designed for children ages 6 and younger. Shelter, mirrors, sand and music are just some of the new paths to discovery that visitors can choose from in the expanded exhibition. Kids can explore a giant bird’s nest, three sand boxes (one with a sand conveyor), a glass tunnel, and African, Asian and Caribbean drums. Older kids can learn about physics hands-on with slides, seesaws, a water play area, and dozens of other interactive exhibits. All ages.
Preschool Place Puppet Show: The Great Cat Trap Weekends, through May 12:30, 2:30 & 5:15 pm Join professor Mouseington in his cheese laboratory as he tries to design the ultimate cat trap. Can you help him figure out what size and shape to make the cat trap? Free with Hall admission, ages 6 and younger.

Lifelong Learning Family Workshops: Science Makes Art May 10 12 – 2 pm In Science Makes Art, families work with the technique of creating color using birefringent materials. They will discover how to make all the colors of the rainbow and then they will use this knowledge to create a work of art.
Preschool Family Adventures: Fluttering Butterflies May 6 at 11 am May 8, 10, 13 at 10 am $15 per session for one child and one adult, $8 per additional child or adult. Members: $9 per session for one child and one adult, $8 per additional child or adult. What happens to caterpillars when they grow up? Explore the life cycle of a butterfly and make a pair of beautiful wings to wear.
Art and Science Fridays: Marble Painting May 2, 3:15-4:15 pm Beautiful marbleized paper can be created from two substances that don’t mix: oil and water. $3, $2 members

Magic: The Science of Illusion June 21 – September 14 Come to Magic: The Science of Illusion and learn that magic is more than a simple trick! Experience theatrical illusions as audience members do, and then peek behind the scenes to see how each illusion is performed. In this unique exhibition, see original video presentations by professional magicians Penn & Teller, Goldfinger & Dove, Max Maven and Jade. Then go backstage to put yourself in the illusion and experiment with hands-on science activities. Find out how science, math, psychology, culture and the art of performance come together in creating an illusion. Free with Hall admission.
