Meet Explainer Cassandra Douglas

"Before working at NYSCI, I wasn't very interested in learning science. All I knew about geology was that New York doesn't have many earthquakes," said Explainer Cassandra Douglas, who has worked at NYSCI since July 2005.

But her four-and-a-half years at NYSCI have changed all that. Now, as an Explainer, she teaches visitors of all ages the science behind NYSCI's exhibits, and she also inspires people to be excited about science. "I've gained a greater appreciation for science and learning," she said. "I've learned how to speak up, ask engaging questions, and teach children to problem-solve on their own by tackling the situation differently...the experiences I've had at NYSCI have been fun and helped me to make the decision to become a teacher."

Cassandra is just one of many success stories to be found in NYSCI's Explainer program, which is part of our Science Career Ladder. One of the goals of the Science Career Ladder is to inspire young people to pursue careers in science and teaching in order to address one of the challenges of education in America: a shortage of qualified science teachers.

Like Cassandra, many of our Explainers go on to pursue teaching careers. Many times, that love of teaching starts with a part-time job at NYSCI. "Every time I put on my red apron and get ready for a thousand or more students to visit, I carry a sense of pride," said Cassandra. "For me, when I climb aboard a school bus filled with kids, my day peaks once I say to them, 'Welcome to the New York Hall of Science...Who's ready for learning and ready to have fun?"
