Annual Intrepid Sea, Air & Space
Museum “Kids Week” Program Sails to New York Hall of Science
2-15-07
Queens, N.Y. – The New York Hall of Science will host Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum programs February 20 – 21.
Even though the Intrepid is in New Jersey for restoration, the Intrepid’s programs can be found in the ConEdison Gallery (in front of Mercury Capsule) at the Hall. From February 20 – 21, the Intrepid Education Staff will offer several fun and interesting activities. Each day, visitors can learn about the mysteries of flight through hands-on interactive activities in which children can create paper airplanes and flying propeller gliders.
At 11:30 a.m. and 3 p.m., during Aviation aboard the Intrepid, children will learn how an aircraft carrier like the Intrepid can work as an airport that travels throughout the world. Children will work with Museum Educators from the Intrepid to explore different artifacts that relate to the ship and its place in the world of aviation. They will also discover the differences between a land-based airport and the special challenges of having an airport aboard a ship.
At 12:30 p.m., the Intrepid’s museum educators will present Wings and Tails. Have you ever wondered how people come up with ideas that become the latest technological advancement? The Intrepid’s museum educators will help children discover how humans have borrowed concepts from nature to design, create and use aircraft. Examining the similarities between birds and airplanes will help them make this connection.
Established in 1982, the Intrepid Sea, Air, & Space Museum complex was comprised of the 900-foot-long aircraft carrier Intrepid with two full decks and four theme halls; the guided missile submarine Growler; and an extensive aircraft collection including the A-12 Blackbird, the fastest plane in the world, and the British Airways Concorde, the fastest commercial aircraft in the world. The Museum has been offering a wide variety of programs and events for children and adults.
