Top Hat, Black Tie and Bubbles!
10-27-06

Queens, N.Y. –The New York Hall of Science will honor prominent business and civic leaders at its Awards Gala on Wednesday, November 1. The black-tie event will be held at Chelsea Piers in Manhattan at 6:30 pm.

For the past three years, the Hall’s gala has raised over $1 million for Hall programs and exhibits. Attended by leaders in business, science and government, the popular annual fundraising event is known for its quirky science-related activities, including DNA sampling, bubble-making, a science demonstration involving all gala guests, and an astronomy show in an inflatable planetarium.

This year, the Hall will honor the following:

Corning Incorporated will be honored with the Distinguished Leadership Award for 155 years of growing through innovation. The award will be accepted by James R. Houghton, Chairman and retired CEO of Corning Incorporated, and Amory Houghton, Jr., retired Chairman and CEO of Corning Glass Works (now Corning Incorporated) and former U.S. Representative from New York’s 29th Congressional District.

William T. Golden will receive the Distinguished Service Award for Public Understanding of Science in recognition of his extraordinary legacy of increasing interest in, study in, and pursuit of studies in the sciences.

Steven R. Loranger, Chairman, President and CEO of ITT Corporation will be presented with the Distinguished Leadership Award for achievement in technology in its industries and advancing human progress around the globe.

Patricia F. Russo, Chairman and CEO of Lucent Technologies, will receive the Distinguished Leadership Award for outstanding achievement in the field of telecommunications and exceptional commitment to education.

Press are invited to attend the cocktails and reception portion of the gala. Digital, print-quality photos will be available for those unable to attend.

The purpose of the New York Hall of Science is to bring the excitement and understanding of science and technology to children, families, teachers and others by galvanizing their curiosity and offering them creative, participatory ways to learn.
