New York Hall of Science Hosts National Chemistry Week Celebration On October 28, 2006
10-02-06
Queens, N.Y. – Chemistry is everywhere, especially in your home! From paint to glue, your house is built from materials made possible by chemistry. From 10 am – 4 pm on Saturday, October 28, discover the wonders of chemistry at the New York Hall of Science with demonstrations presented by the New York Section of the American Chemical Society.
Chemists from corporations, universities and professional organizations will mix up fun and science excitement as they focus on chemistry around the house. Participate in more than 25 hands-on chemistry activities, from making slime to exploring chromatography. (Don’t know what chromatography is? Visit to find out!) All activities are free with general admission.
Demonstrations will include*:
-
“The Science of Making Soda” – Pick the flavor and color combination of your soda creation and give it a name. Then Pepsi scientists will manufacture your special soda and give you a special gift with your creation.
-
“Fool Your Senses” – Do you really only taste with your mouth? What other senses are used for taste. Try to solve the mystery of the “Fool Your Senses” demonstration.
-
“Slime” – Who doesn't like to play with a ball of goo!
-
“Ooblek” – This demo turns a gooey mess to a semi-solid and then back to a gooey mess right in your hands
-
“Gluep” – This must be some sort of sticky gooey fantasy world!
-
“Paint Polymers" – Find out what makes paint stick to walls
-
“Wood glues”– How do you stick two porous pieces of wood together? Learn about the chemistry involved.
-
“Crystal Forest”– Make a paper tree and color the branches with a magic marker. Then watch a special chromatography solution get drawn up into your tree blending the colors and also creating an icy crystal effect on the branches!
-
“Silly Putty®” – Learn how to make your own bouncy Silly Putty® ball to take home with you!
-
“Polystyrene Shrinkers” – Make your own “shrinky dinks” using common packaging materials and magic markers. Put them in the oven and watch them shrink and harden before your eyes.
-
“Mad Scientist Lab Supplies” – Check out all of the wild glassware used in chemistry labs to perform experiments. Get dizzy watching stir bars spin liquids into a vortex tornado!
*Some demonstrations may be subject to change.
Participating companies, colleges and universities will include Pepsi-Cola, St. John's University, Hofstra University, Adelphi University, ConEd, OSI Pharmaceuticals, St. Joseph's College of NY, Manhattan College, Manhattan Village Academy, Pace University, Barnard College (Columbia University), Citrus and Allied, VWR Scientific Supply Catalogue and others.
