Molecules Are Everywhere, Including a New Hall Exhibition
5-31-07

Queens, N.Y. - The New York Hall of Science recently unveiled a new exhibition on the role of molecules in health, illness and prevention. Molecules and Health: The Shape of Science offers visitors a rare, close-up look at the microscopic particles that make up every substance around us.

Scientists investigate molecules to promote health and to prevent diseases. These "molecule detectives" have discovered that the shape of a molecule can offer insight into what a molecule does and how it might interact without other molecules.

Enriching educational experiences in Molecules and Health: The Shape of Science include:

  • using a "molecular measuring stick" to get a sense of the microscopic sense of molecules
  • constructing ball and stick models of molecules
  • learning about stereoisonomers with a receptor molecule puzzle
  • matching molecules with common objects in a Molecule Match Game
  • guiding a magnetically active anticeptive "molecule" through a maze of bacteria and germs

Molecules and Health: The Shape of Science will be on view at the Hall through September, and will then begin a national tour to other science and technology centers throughout the United States. The exhibition is based on Marvelous Molecules - The Secret of Life, a permanent exhibition at the Hall of Science
