French Researcher and “Human Calculator” Breaks World Record at the Hall
11-16-07

QUEENS, N.Y. – Alexis Lemaire, an artificial intelligence researcher and PhD student from the University of Reims Champagne-Ardenne in France, has broken the world record for finding the 13th root of a 200-digit number. Taking 1 minute 12 seconds and using only his mind, Lemaire, also known as the “Human Calculator,” broke the record on November 15 at the New York Hall of Science. Lemaire held the previous record, which was 1 minute 17 seconds.

The 13th root of a 200-digit number is a random 16-digit number, which, when multiplied by itself 13 times, equals the 200-digit number. For the world record attempt, the 200-digit number was randomly selected and displayed on a computer screen. The winning answer was 2397207667966701.
