The Hall Announces New President and CEO

Queens, N.Y. – The Board of Trustees of the New York Hall of Science is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Margaret Honey as the Hall’s President and CEO, effective November 1. An official announcement of the appointment was made at the Hall’s annual awards gala, held on November 18 at Chelsea Piers.

Nicholas M. Donofrio, Co-Chair of the Board of Trustees, said that Honey, a former executive at the Education Development Center, was chosen after an intensive international search. “Dr. Honey has an ideal combination of skills, experience and enthusiasm to lead the New York Hall of Science,” Donofrio said. “Her background in education is directly aligned with the Hall's mission and the board is confident that her leadership will build a bright future for the Hall.”

Honey is widely recognized for her work using digital technologies to support children’s learning across the disciplines of science, mathematics, engineering and technology. Prior to joining the Hall, she served as a Vice President of the Education Development Center (EDC) and Director of EDC’s Center for Children and Technology.

While at EDC, Honey was the architect and overseer of numerous large-scale projects funded by organizations including the National Science Foundation, the Institute for Education Sciences, the Carnegie Corporation, the Library of Congress, the U.S. Department of Education, and the U.S. Department of Energy. She also co-directed the Northeast and Islands Regional Education Laboratory, a 40 million dollar federally-funded initiative designed to help educators, policy makers and communities improve schools by helping them access and leverage the most current research about learning and K-12 education.

“I am honored to have been chosen to lead the New York Hall of Science,” said Honey. “The Hall’s hands-on exhibits and educational programming make it a wonderful resource for children and families. I look forward to building on the achievements the Hall has enjoyed over the last 22 years.”

Honey, 52, received a doctorate in developmental psychology from Columbia University and a bachelor’s from Hampshire College. In addition to her work at EDC, she has also held positions at Bank Street College of Education and Sesame Workshop.

Built initially as a pavilion for the 1964 World’s Fair, the Hall features the largest collection of hands-on exhibits in New York City. Since 1986, the Hall has served more than five million children, parents and teachers.
