Pleurosigma (marine diatoms) by Michael Stringer, Nikon Small World 2009 exhibition

Queens, N.Y. – With the appearance of gracefully swooping beams of light or a colorful array of feathers, a dazzling photo of Pleurosigma (marine diatoms) has won the 2009 Nikon Small World Photomicrography Competition, on view at the New York Hall of Science through February 22. Michael Stringer of Westcliff-on-Sea, Essex, United Kingdom took home the top honor with this image, which was magnified 200 times and taken using darkfield and polarized light.

The remarkable images on view originated from nearly 2,000 submissions, the most ever for the competition, from 63 countries for Nikon’s 34th Photomicrography Competition. The goal of the competition is to showcase the beauty and complexity of life as seen through the light microscope. For over 30 years, Nikon has rewarded the world's best photomicrographers who make critically important scientific contributions to life sciences, bioresearch and materials science.
