Having a Ball with Chemistry
10-03-08

Celebrate National Chemistry Week 2008 at the New York Hall of Science

Saturday, October 25, 10 am – 4 pm

Queens, N.Y. – Visitors of all ages are invited to join scientists from the American Chemical Society on October 25 for hands-on fun in honor of National Chemistry Week. This year's theme, "Having a Ball with Chemistry," focuses on the materials, design, and safety of sporting equipment, as well as hydration and good nutrition for athletes. The program will be held from 10 am – 4 pm on Saturday, October 25 and is presented by The New York Section of the American Chemical Society.

Chemists from corporations, universities and professional organizations will mix up fun and science excitement with more than 20 activity tables. Visitors can participate in hands-on chemistry activities including creating Gatorade, playing with goo, and making silly putty. All activities are free with general admission.

Demonstrations will include*:

  • “The Science of Making Gatorade” – Pick the flavor and color combination of your Gatorade creation and give it a name. Then Gatorade scientists will manufacture your Gatorade and give you a special gift with your creation.
  • “NASCAR Drivers’ Secret Weapon” – PepsiCo Sports Marketing will demonstrate the “in car hydration system” developed for NASCAR drivers
  • “Hydration Science” – Gatorade Sports and Science Institute will test athletes and discuss the importance of hydration science
  • “Slime” – Who doesn't like to play with a ball of goo?
  • “Ooblek” – This demo turns from gooey mess to a semi-solid and then back to a gooey mess right in your hands
  • “Gluep” – This must be some sort of sticky gooey fantasy world!
  • “Meet Mr. Met” – Meet and take your photo with New York Mets’ mascot Mr. Met

* These demonstrations are scheduled, but may change without notice.

Participants include some of New York’s most prestigious colleges, universities, and industries. Also scheduled to appear:

  • American Chemical Society National President, Dr. Bruce Bursten
  • New York City Council Member Hiram Monserrate
  • Dr. Mehmood Khan M.D., SVP and Chief Science Officer (CSO) of PepsiCo
