Back by Popular Demand: Crystal Winter Continues to Enchant at the Hall
11-26-07

Queens, N.Y. - Celebrate the beauty of the season with Crystal Winter at the New York Hall of Science. The program returns to the Hall for its second year with even more exhibits, workshops and demonstrations about the science behind the symmetry of crystals.

The interactive Crystal Winter Village features a giant snow globe perfect for family photos and dazzling winter décor designed to capture the children’s imaginations. The power of steam engines, featured everyday in one of the Hall’s many engaging demonstrations, has been harnessed to run a whimsical train display, while a specially designed Crystal Winter demonstration explains how and why ice crystals form. Visitors can also experience their own Arctic adventures in an exciting motion simulator ride that whisks them across glaciers and through the Northern Lights.

Snow Flake Bentley: The Search for Snow, part of the popular Live Science Theater series, takes children back in time to discover the beauty of snowflakes with the man who first photographed their amazing designs under a microscope, Wilson “Snowflake” Bentley. Younger children will also enjoy Hey Snow, Where Do You Go?, a puppet show featuring Susie Snowflake and her trip from the sky down to a lonely tree. Each show is followed by a craft workshop where everyone can make a one-of-a-kind souvenirs, including snowflakes, ornaments, and puppets of penguins and polar bears. Visitors can top off their visit with a trip to the Astronomy Discovery Lab for a demonstration about winter constellations and by marching in the Crystal Winter Parade, which takes children all around the museum to celebrate the season with the help of special holiday music.
