Flashes of Genius Visits the New York Hall of Science
10-09-07

Queens, N.Y. - The Swedish organization Flashes of Genius visited the New York Hall of Science on October 5. Following is more information about the event.

The success of Sweden’s industry is based on a foundation of entrepreneurship and innovation. The joy of inventing and exploring is encouraged early in life through the Swedish organization Flashes of Genius, which lets children’s innate curiosity, creativity and self confidence blossom. In early October, Flashes of Genius heads west to give American children the same opportunity.

At the Embassy of Sweden in Washington DC (House of Sweden) and at the New York Hall of Science, American children were encouraged to imagine and create. The program encourages children to boundlessly think outside the box and create inventions, both possible and impossible ones.

- The goal is to form more creative and entrepreneurial individuals with self esteem to solve problems and see possibilities with every challenge. This should start at an early age, continue throughout school and remain in life as we become professionals. This benefits both the individuals and our society, says Sofia Björkvi, Flashes of Genius in Sweden.

The initiator of the events is Invest in Sweden Agency which carries out the activities together with the Embassy of Sweden in Washington, DC, and the Consulate General of Sweden in New York.

- The purpose of inviting the Flashes of Genius to the US is to present one of the core fundamentals for Sweden’s international success over the years. We want to show how we foster the only unique long-term resource we have – our children. They are not afraid to do the wrong thing, because wrong becomes right. They are wonderfully mistake-driven, says Tony Svensson, Executive Director, Invest in Sweden Agency North America.
