Begin Your Superhero Training By Scaling a Wall at the New York Hall of Science
4-21-07

Queens, N.Y. – Lots of seemingly ordinary kids will be trained to use their arms and legs to climb a wall in a way that would make a superhero jealous. The training is part of a new activity that will soon be offered to those scheduling birthday parties and sleepovers at the New York Hall of Science.

Although there’s no denying that all kids have hidden superpowers inside them, this newfound spider-sense is actually the result of magnetism. No ropes or handholds are used. Instead, kids strap on special leg and arm braces that, combined with a simple rolling motion, enable them to move up and down the Spider Wall, a 24-foot-wide x 8-foot-high magnetic wall. Climbers receive a group training session, followed by a personal climbing experience. Kids up to 150 lbs can participate.

Demonstrations of the Spider Wall will be held at the Hall every Saturday and Sunday in May at 2:45 and 3:45 pm.

Beginning in Fall 2007, the Hall will offer the Spider Wall experience as part of a paid add-on to select private events, including Super Science Birthday Parties, Science Sleepovers, Science After Dark, and Discovery Days. To schedule a Super Science Birthday Party, please call 718.699.0005 ext. 353; to schedule a Science Sleepover, Discovery Day, or Science After Dark for Cub Scout, Boy Scout, Brownie, and Girl Scout troops, please call 718.699.0005 ext. 348.

The Spider Wall is made possible by a generous gift from the Dochtermann Family.
