Educator Guide

3-5 6-8

"We have a long way to go in reading, math, science, social studies and in the arts, but the future of our nation will depend on whether we get serious about scientific education. A museum like this that is eager to partner with us and that is serious about education is such a vital asset. It's one of the real, natural riches of our city."

Joel I. Klein, Chancellor New York City Schools - November 15, 2004, New York Hall of Science

CSIT is a new initiative of the Hall, funded by the National Science Foundation. The project puts laptops and other digital tools into New York classrooms within a context where inquiry-based, STEM learning is supported. The forensic science modules are made up of a series of connected narrative based lessons that incorporate a variety of technologies into hands-on activities that correlate to the NY State standards for 7th through 12th grade science and Regents courses in Living Environment, Chemistry, Physics, Biology and Earth Science. Mystery modules are also appropriate for teaching in the context of a forensic science elective course. Along with the curriculum, the teacher uses portable technology labs that contain a class set of computers and other digital equipment that once certified the teachers will bring back to their classrooms for students to use to solve the mysteries. Upon completion, participants become certified to rent the CSIT Lab Kit.

This course will provide specific instruction and training for the physical science activities within the Science Scope & Sequence, providing teachers an opportunity to receive additional science content, extensions and further applications of the Science Core curriculum kits to their classroom. This class utilizes a hybrid course environment of traditional face-to-face instruction and on-line instruction to support science instruction and enhance professional development for the NYC Science Core Curriculum as it relates to the topics in physical science from grades K-8. This hybrid course environment is aligned to the NYC Science Scope and Sequence for all grades. This course strategy can provide the flexible support that teachers need to become confident doing hands-on physical science activities needed to enhance science teaching and learning in the classroom for student achievement within the aligned curriculum. The use of reform-minded and research based pedagogy will be highlighted in this web-enabled environment to stimulate critical conversation and allow for practitioner reflection.
The course will be divided and delivered in both modalities so that the objectives and project activities can be best achieved utilizing the appropriate seat time.
The web-enabled tool set will be a combination of synchronous tools, like chat, and video and asynchronous tools, like email, webinars and threaded discussions, which will lead to more instructional support.
